Freddy*, once struggling with homelessness and alcoholism, is now thriving in the third stage of The Haymarket Foundation’s Bourke Street Program as a Senior Member, mentoring newcomers and showing what’s possible with dedication and support.

After spending nearly five years sleeping rough and struggling with harm related to alcohol use, Freddy’s journey through the program has been transformative. “I never thought I’d have the life I do now. I also neer thought I could end up homeless, but I did” he says. From structured fitness routines and shared housing to deeply impactful mental health work, the program gave Freddy the tools to rebuild his life. Reuniting with his family has been one of the greatest gifts of his recovery. “I call my mum every day now. That’s non negotiable. After all the years she worried about me, I can finally be there for her. Recently, she asked me to take her to the doctor, and she said I was a great companion, asking the doctor all the right questions. Being able to support her like that means so much to me.” Freddy has also reunited with his brother and his niece and nephew, who are his pride and joy. “I talk to them about Taylor Swift and other fun things. It feels incredible to connect with them again.”

Freddy’s story is a testament to the life-changing impact of the Bourke Street Program and the generosity of donors who make it possible. “The program gave me connection, health, studies, work, and my family back,” he says. “I couldn’t have imagined this life a few months ago. To the people who fund this program, thank you for giving me a new and better life.”

Freddy is now working part-time while pursuing a Diploma in Business, taking a measured approach to building a stable future. “Stick to the program,” he advises newcomers. “Show up, and you’ll see—you can have a life beyond your wildest dreams.”
